Hiren Singharay – Surrey County Council Candidate for the Byfleets

Hiren Singharay has been a strong supporter of the Liberal Democrats since 1992 and has been an active campaigner in Woking since 2009. Originally from a small village in West Bengal, India, Hiren has enjoyed a successful 40-year career in banking, working across Asia, Europe, and the Americas. He holds a Master’s in Economics from the University of Calcutta and is fluent in five languages.

Now retired, Hiren has dedicated much of his time to philanthropic efforts. Alongside his wife Rodica, he helped coordinate humanitarian aid for Ukrainian refugees in 2022 and supported earthquake relief efforts in Turkey. He also funds and supports initiatives in his home state of West Bengal, including a free school for underprivileged children and a football team for girls in a deprived area. He is keen to ensure that Surrey County Council meets its obligations to families of children with special educational needs and disabilities.

Hiren said, “I am passionate about using my diverse experience for the betterment of the local community. I am keen to bring my leadership experience and global perspective to Surrey County Council.”
