Woking Lib Dems will fight any rises in tuition fees

19 Oct 2010

Woking Lib Dem councillors were dismayed to read extracts from the Browne Review report on university tuition fees calling for the present cap to be lifted. Woking Lib Dems are opposed to forcing students to take on huge amounts of debt to fund their university education.

Liberal Democrat Council Group Leader, Cllr Richard Sharp said:

"We cannot go back on the promise we made to the students who voted for us despite the parlous state of the country's finances.

"We, as Liberal Democrats, should consult widely with all universities and students about the recommendations made in the Browne report and any lifting of the cap should be opposed.

"We urge Lib Dem MPs to work together with Business Secretary, Vince Cable MP, to find alternatives to increase funding for universities. Students should not be penalised for the recklessness of the banks and the previous Government, who created this astronomical deficit crisis in the first place."

"We are reminding the Coalition Government to work fairly and in the best interests of all our students living in Woking."
