Why did the Brookwood resident cross the bridge?

1 Nov 2006

To show that it is now possible to get safely and quietly to the other side! A number of Brookwood residents will be joined by ward councillor, Philip Goldenberg, and representatives from Woking Borough Council this Tuesday (31 October) to officially reopen Sheets Heath Bridge.

The old structure, which has been used to cross the Basingstoke Canal for many years, had to be closed in August/September this year for vital repair works. Much of the steel work was corroded, and the deck made a loud clattering noise every time a vehicle crossed from one side to the other. Due to the severity of the corrosion in some of the structure, the work was delayed, resulting in completion at the end of October.

Residents expressed concerns several years ago which prompted the question of who actually owns the bridge. Although, historically, ownership of the bridge has been unclear, the Council has now clarified matters by asserting ownership of the bridge for insurance purposes. It will, however, continue to liaise with local people about any matters concerning the structure.

Recognising that urgent maintenance was required, Woking Borough Council started working closely with the Sheets Heath Residents' Association back in 2003, and the newly refurbished bridge is the result of months of hard work by both organisations.

Motorists can now benefit from improved signage in the area, and the knowledge that its use will not be disturbing people living in the area. Talking about the work, ward councillor Philip Goldenberg said: "This was an excellent exercise in co-operation between the Council and the Sheets Heath Residents' Association. Together we have markedly improved the quality of life for people living in the area whilst retaining the historic features of this old bridge."

Chairman of Sheets Heath Residents' Association, John Crook, added: "We would like to thank Cllr Goldenberg and everyone at Woking Borough Council who has been involved in this project, the costs of which have been shared between the residents of Sheets Heath and the Council on a 30% - 70% basis. The refurbished bridge will benefit the residents of Brookwood and the wider community for many years to come."
