Lib Dems Save Pyrford Cricket Club

Graham Chrystie

In December last year, your local Councillor, Graham Chrystie, responding to concerned telephone calls from Andy Grimshaw, immediately left to visit the Cricket Pavilion Club House. And lucky he did. The entire front of the building was bulging out… the roof held up by temporary props. The villagers were right to be concerned.

ACTION

The next day Graham, accompanied by the Club Chairman, Simon Clifton, returned to the building to see what could be done. At Graham's request, they were joined by the Woking Borough Chief Building Surveyor, David Edwards. Mr. Edwards inspected the building and issued a 'Potentially Dangerous Building' Order that very afternoon. Graham was then able to move forward with contacting the Borough on an emergency basis to try to arrange finance. The Pyrford Neighbourhood Forum decided to recommend an award of £14,000 which was a substantial portion of their Community Infrastructure Fund. Other sponsors stepped up and the Club was able to guarantee enough money to cover the necessary rebuilding costs. Graham, having specialist knowledge, ensured the Club complied with all necessary technical requirements for payment of the £14,000 - such as surveyors, builders, insurance etc.

SOLUTION

Last week the repairs commenced, and Simon and Graham are indebted to all who helped and especially these who promised to contribute. Pyrford's great community spirit is demonstrated yet again. An incredibly important village community centre was saved.

INVALUBLE LOCAL ASSET CONTINUES TO GRACE THE VILLAGE

The Club is a key constituent of the Village and in the past few years it has increased its work with younger members, particularly focusing on girls' teams, which have excelled. We are all grateful that the Pavilion is still with us, and ought to soon be ready for the new season.
