Lib Dems persuade Woking Council to act on Climate change
On Thursday 25th July 2019 Woking Borough Council unanimously agreed the Lib Dem motion to declare a climate emergency and aim to become carbon neutral by 2030.
In the first Full Council meeting since Woking Council went to No Overall Control, the Lib Dems successfully persuaded Councillors to declare a climate emergency and start to draft an ambitious plan to reduce carbon emissions. The Council, its wholly-owned Thameswey companies and contractors will now plan to go carbon neutral by 2030.
Lib Dem Councillor Will Forster, who proposed the motion, said:
"I am delighted the Borough Council unanimously backed my motion. No-one thinks that Woking on its own can successfully tackle this huge global crisis, but we can take a lead and do our bit. By the Council declaring a climate emergency and setting out a process to stop contributing to climate change, it took a vital step in combating climate change."
"The Lib Dems, whether nationally or locally, have always been at the forefront of progress on the environment. Nationally, we were the first major political party to call for a zero-carbon Britain. Locally, I am proud we have ensured Woking Borough Council plays its part in the fight against climate change."
