The Government has given the green light to build Heathrow's third runway. The main argument centred on trying to solve the real fact that Heathrow is overcrowded and is operating at over 90% capacity. The Government says that a third runway is necessary to meet rising demand. The Liberal Democrats oppose a third runway and propose major investment in high speed rail links with the UK's major cities to reduce domestic air travel as well as carbon emissions.
