Serious concerns have been raised about Conservative plans for an £8,000 payment for residential care after figures released today by the Liberal Democrats have revealed that 3.5m pensioner households (66%) do not have assets of £8,000 excluding their homes.
On her blog Rosie Sharpley has criticised both the Tories and "blue Labour" for their policies on the NHS. Rosie has worked in the NHS most of her adult life and sees what's happening first hand. Here's the beginning of her post
Rosie Sharpley expressed concern today at the recent report by the Electoral Commission about voter registration. Rosie said "I was particularly concerned by the finding that 56% of people between the ages of 18-24 haven't registered. I can understand why young people are alienated from the political process at the moment, but I hope many will realise in time that this election does have great potential to change the politics of the UK for good. If elected I will vote for fair voting so that every vote in every election counts and we can end the two party duopoly of Tweedledum and Tweedledumber."
Candidates are being asked to sign the POWER Pledge:
Cllr Denzil Coulson reports from Monday night's council meeting.
The local Lib Dem team were at Woking station on 18 February distributing Rosie Sharpley's rail survey to early morning travellers. The survey asked passengers about how often they travel by train, how they get to the station and their experience at the station and on the train. "I look forward to hearing from passengers on their current experience of rail travel" said local Lib Dem candidate for MP Rosie Sharpley. "We carried out a similar survey last year" continued Rosie "and we found it an invaluable source of information on rail passengers' current experiences".
'These cuts to Surrey County Council's services will hit Woking hard,' said Will Forster, Liberal Democrat County Councillor for South Woking, after the meeting this Tuesday that set the budget for 2010/11. 'Cuts to transport budgets mean there may be no money at all for road improvements that Surrey's Woking Local Committee have already agreed are needed. We've had a petition with nearly a thousand signatures asking for something to be done to improve the lethal crossroads at Blackhorse Road, Saunders Lane and Heath House Road, and another asking for improvements at Brewery Road. Both of these were to be made safer, but now thanks to Tory County Hall's cuts it is unlikely that anything will now happen for at least the next three years. That is unacceptable.'
Rosie Sharpley is adamant that it is essential for voters to know their candidates and to have as easy a way of contacting them as possible. So, as well as face to face on the door step, local Lib Dems regularly publish magazines, newspapers and of course our local "Focus" newsletters. This website carries local, regional and national news and has a tab to the left if you want to contact Rosie or your local councillor or campaigner. On top of this, as a new venture Rosie is now trialling a blog so that people can understand her views on issues in a more personal way. You can access it here http://rosiesharpley.wordpress.com/ or by clicking on the tab in the left hand menu.
Leader's Speech to Spring Conference 2025
The Liberal Democrat plan commits to making the UK a global leader in animal welfare through stronger standards, workforce investment, and ethical farming practices.
Only the Liberal Democrats will stand up to Trump, invest in the UK’s security, support Ukraine, hold back Russia, deepen our ties with European and commonwealth partners, and stand up for liberal, British values.
As liberals, we believe that true equality is achieved when individuals are not only free from prejudice and discrimination, but also free to fulfil their potential. So fighting for LGBTQ+ rights is not a choice Liberals make.
The Liberal Democrats' bold plan to restore UK leadership in science and innovation will drive investment, boost global collaboration, and ensure technology benefits everyone, not just the privileged few.
Reflecting on the year’s International Women’s Day theme of “accelerate action”, I am sadly reminded of how much more we still need to achieve.
The UK needs to strengthen both our Armed Forces and our soft power.
Today is Holocaust Memorial Day.
The UK must once again stand tall, leading on the world stage and working closely with those who share our interests – including, above all, our partners in Europe.
