Making Woking work for you
Liberal Democrats up and down the country assembled this week for the party's annual conference, the first since the formation of the coalition government back in May of this year.
On Wednesday afternoon Nick Clegg gave his first speech to conference as Deputy Prime Minister. It was a speech that laid out the achievements of the Liberal Democrats in government so far and our aspirations for the future. So much has already been achieved and many Liberal Democrat manifesto pledges are being actioned in government:
Thousands of low income earners will receive extra money in their pay packets thanks to the raising of the tax threshold
ID cards are well on their way to being scrapped in line with our civil liberties pledges
Child detentions will be stopped by early next year
Our troops are coming home from Afghanistan
People will have a say for a fairer voting system in the AV referendum
We know that things are not going to be easy in the coming months and even years. Thirteen years of Labour government has left us with a debt to repay of almost £85,000 per minute of every day. We have difficult decisions to make both locally and nationally.
Your local Liberal Democrat team will be fighting at every turn to protect the services that you rely on here in Woking and the surrounding villages. We will fight to ensure that there is consultation and discussion on any service changes.
As Nick Clegg said on Wednesday:
"We have four years and seven months before the next election. 1690 days. We're not going to waste a single second. There is no time for the old go-slow, timid governments of the past. We're keeping our eyes on the horizon, not on the headlines. Building, brick by brick, day by day, the changes Britain needs."
Your local Liberal Democrat team in Woking will do the same. Whatever the future holds, we can promise that we will fight for Woking and the surrounding villages at every opportunity to make sure that you get the best deal from your local services.
