Brexit would result in a decade lost to political crisis and economic trouble
Three years on since the referendum on the UK's membership of the European Union, the Liberal Democrats have warned Brexit must be stopped to avoid "a decade lost to political crisis and economic trouble".
Sunday, the 23rd of June, marked three years since the referendum. Despite this, the Conservative Government has been unable to negotiate a Brexit deal that can be agreed by Parliament.
The case for putting Brexit back to the people has instead built momentum with over a million people marching on the streets of London for a final say, while since 2017 every major poll has put Remain ahead of Leave.
Lib Dems Brexit Spokesperson, Tom Brake MP said:
"Three years on from the referendum and it is clearer than ever before that Brexit would result in a decade lost to political crisis and economic trouble. The process has been messy, costly, and long. Now we have a potential new Prime Minister suggesting that the best option is to crash out of the EU."
"The stakes could not be higher. Brexit would spell chaos for British families, businesses, consumers, and travellers. We must therefore give people the power to decide their own future through a People's Vote with the option to stay in the EU."
Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokesperson, Councillor Will Forster added:
"In the immediate aftermath of the referendum, the Lib Dems and I were unequivocal that we would fight to give people the final say on whatever deal came out of the Brexit negotiations."
"We have knocked on doors, set up street stalls, taken part in local debates. At every stage of the arduous Parliamentary process, we have tabled amendments for a people's vote and we have built a movement - a very successful one too, which is why the Lib Dems topped the poll in Woking in the last election."
"Thanks to those efforts, a People's Vote has gone from the possible to the probable. We are closer than ever to stopping Brexit and Lib Dems will not rest until we do."
