Woking to go LD at next GE

A new MRP poll from Opinium has predicted the Lib Dems would defeat the Conservative Party in Woking if a General Election was held soon.

The MRP polling method estimates constituency-level results at elections.

The poll reveals the Lib Dems are the clear challengers to the Conservatives in Woking, with Labour and the Green party a very distant third and fourth respectively. Nationally, the poll shows dozens of ''Blue Wall' seats falling to the Lib Dems, following the disastrous mini budget which has increased mortgage bills by hundreds of pounds a month.

Woking constituency was a two-horse race between the Lib Dems and the Conservatives at the last election, with Will Forster increasing the Lib Dems' vote share by over 13% of the vote, finishing just over 9,000 votes behind the Conservatives.

In recent months the Lib Dems have won three historic parliamentary by-elections against the Conservative party, including Chesham & Amersham, North Shropshire and Tiverton and Honiton.

Locally, the Lib Dems won 7 out of 10 seats up for election in Woking in May, and took control of Woking Borough Council as a result. The Conservatives failed to win a single seat.

Will Forster has said campaigning for investment in local services such as local hospitals, GPs and dentists is his top priority and a key reason for his rising support locally.

Reacting to the poll, Lib Dem parliamentary candidate for Will Forster said:

"Woking is on a knife edge at the next election. The choice at the next election will be between a hard working local Lib Dem team, and an out of touch and grossly incompetent Conservative Government."

"People here tell me they are fed up with long ambulance waiting times, a lack of GP appointments and sewage being pumped into local rivers."

"For too long this Conservative Government has taken our area for granted. The Conservative party cannot be trusted with our economy, local health services or our treasured environment."

People here know that only the Lib Dem can beat the Conservative party in Woking and offer a fairer deal."

Liberal Democrats are calling for:

  • A fully implemented windfall tax on oil and gas giants.
  • A scrapping of the planned lift on bankers bonus caps.
  • Guarantee support for businesses with energy costs for one year, not just six months, to provide greater certainty.
  • Freeze domestic energy prices at what they are now, instead of hiking them.
  • Invest in a winter rescue plan for the NHS to recruit more doctors, dentists and paramedics.
